White instead relies on the fact that natural play should yield him a small but lasting advantage. The main question is whether White can retain the harmony of his pieces in the blocked position of the Mar del Plata attack (7...Nc6 8.d5 Ne7) when both sides attack on opposite wings. The best answer to that question is given by the classical system with 9.Nd2, in which White‘s knights and bishops cooperate harmoniously. Many great players of the past and the present have used and use this system successfully. Until play becomes very concrete, usually around moves 18-20, positional understanding is far more useful than computer assistance. At first, engines are sceptical about many objectively best white moves, and the author has seen this as a challenge to prove that in certain positions human understanding is still more valuable than the calculating powers of the computer. The videos explaining the Mar del Plata Attack (which form the main part of this DVD) offer strategic guidance and show typical tactical ideas, while presenting a detailed, solid and aggressive repertoire. The less forcing lines (such as 7...Nbd7, 7...Na6, 7...exd4 and 6...Bg4) are covered on a more general level. A new feature that helps the viewer to understand and learn the opening better and faster is the interactive format. Most of the videos alternate general explanations with quizzes giving the viewer a chance to test his knowledge and to increase his skills.

King’s Indian fans who choose the Mar del Plata attack (7...Nc6) against White’s classical system (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0) usually aim for a complex position with mutual attacks on open wings, requiring long-term strategic planning and tactical sharpness in critical moments. Computers often do not know how to handle the arising complex strategic positions, which suits players who like to think on their own instead of memorizing long variations. However, the fashionable Bayonet Attack (9.b4) interferes with Black’s ideas. After Black’s main move 9...Nh5 the positions opens, the lines get forced and computer analysis is important again. But this DVD offers an antidote against White’s Bayonet Attack, namely 9...a5! This move leads to sound positions with very few concrete lines, in which the focus is on strategy not on tactics. Objectively chances are equal but if Black knows what to do things might quickly become dangerous for White.

Magnus Carlsen knows how to avoid sharp theoretical lines but still get positions which allow him to put his opponents under pressure. Here it is interesting to see how Carlsen has played against the Sicilian recently. With 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ he avoided the Najdorf and the Dragon and against 2…e6 he played 3.g3, the subject of this 60 minutes DVD. At first sight 3.g3 seems harmless and seems to transpose into a passive line of the Closed Sicilian, but White has many opportunities to make the game complex and force Black to solve problems: 1) He may play an improved King’s Indian Attack and sharpen the position with Qe2 and c2-c4!. 2) He may try to weaken Black’s pawn formation in the center with 3…d5 4.exd5 exd5 5.d4 3) He may play to form a broad center with c2-c3 and d2-d4 These options show why this variation is dangerous and why elite players such as Carlsen and Adams continue to win with it. You can do the same. FIDE Senior Trainer and IM Andrew Martin has recorded extensively for ChessBase.
